Biostasis Newsletter May 2023
Biostasis Technologies launches the first issue of our monthly newsletter
Biostasis Technologies was incorporated in 2022 to drive technological progress in the field of human cryopreservation. It’s our belief that cryonics is one of the most transformative ideas in the history of humanity. But there is still a lot of work to be done to bridge the gap between scientific progress and the effective delivery of cryonics as an experimental medical procedure.
Given our extensive history in the field, we understand it will not be sufficient to just “sell the science.” We also need to make compelling arguments why it is also the right thing to do, and how society will actually gain from incorporating medical biostasis into its social fabric.
We have ambitious aims for our organization. In the coming months we will start reporting on all the technical projects we are pursuing, including the development and implementation of liquid ventilation for cryonics case work, the development of true whole-body field cryopreservation, designs for a new generation of portable ice baths, new stabilization protocol developments, and the use of quantitative metrics to evaluate cryonics case outcomes and hypothetical scenarios.
We also take a great interest in careful conceptualization and effective communication of the idea of human biostasis. Our website prominently features a rigorous exposition of The Philosophy and Biology of Human Cryopreservation by Dr. Brian Wowk that is obligatory reading for advocates and skeptics of human cryopreservation alike. We seek to update our website with similar high-quality writing and research reports as we evolve.
In March of 2023, Biostasis Technologies welcomed Dr. Max More as our Director of Communications. Max is one of the most eloquent and effective communicators of the philosophy of human enhancement. His recent emphasis on treating cryonics as Plan A in the broader longevity toolkit is a much-needed correction to the often over-hyped field of anti-aging research, and hammers down the elementary point that even people who have reached longevity escape velocity can still be compromised by disease and accidents. In his first Substack about Growing Biostasis, he tackles the complex topic of how to effectively grow individual support for human biostasis. Many of the themes identified in this article will be explored in more detail in the future.
The Case for Brain-Only Preservation by Aschwin de Wolf walks the reader through some obvious, but also some lesser known, (technical) advantages of brain-only cryopreservation compared to head-only “neuro-cryopreservation.” It is greatly encouraging to us to know that some people are currently working hard to make this option an available and safe procedure.
As paper magazines give increasingly way to social-media driven content, we decided to use the Substack platform for most of our communications and monthly newsletter. We have been greatly encouraged by the growth of subscribers, including those of you who decided to become paid subscribers at such an early stage. We appreciate your support and encourage you to share our content as we start building serious momentum for the science and practice of human biostasis, and provide an effective counterpunch to the pro-mortalism and pessimism so prevalent in our culture. We welcome your suggestions for topics to cover and projects to pursue.
If you are in England, do not hesitate to meet some of us at the London Biostasis Symposium on May 20, 2023 where we help grow cryonics in the UK. Then mark your calendar for Max More’s appearance in August 2023 at the prestigious Longevity Summit in Dublin where he shares the stage with the likes of George Church and David Sinclair.
