Well, to be completely thorough there is also the possibility cryonics works but the future is worse than death … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Have_No_Mouth,_and_I_Must_Scream 😱

Might also be fun to bring up the how cryonics can be considered from the hypothetical quantum suicide thought experiment perspective.

This is possible but seems quite unlikely. As technology has advanced over the centuries we’ve witnessed humans everywhere, on average, living better, happier, longer, and more comfortable lives. Freedom and interconnectedness generate prosperity and long term growth. It seems likely this trend will continue. The stuff needed to figure out how to thaw us out. A Mad-Max style hellscape won’t be working on revival tech.

Yes. It is sort of an anthropic principle. Any future that brings us back will at least have (a) the necessary, very advanced technology, and (b) the will to do so. That puts a plausible lower bound on the possible futures. I actually strongly hate these fantasy hellish scenarios. Religion has used them to scare people into belief and obedience. Whatever the purpose of them is with regard to revival from biostasis, I think they are absurdly implausible and psychologically damaging.

I don’t disagree. Just tossed that in because it is a non zero chance. If we are going to discuss Pascal’s Wager (as a serious consideration) it should be included even if derisively. 😏. Let’s face it … we have zero way of absolute knowledge of what society will be like if/when we are revived any more than an Incan from 700 years ago could predict someday someone in their bathrobe typing on an iPad in an unknown land would be referencing their experience.

I enjoy Max’s articles but some are more speculative or philosophical than others. This one invites comments that may have a wink and a nod subtext since it falls into the speculative group, compared to those which focus on technical or legal considerations. Pontification or discussion, you can’t have both.

Not to be preachy even as I am, but retaining self awareness of how our views are received by folks outside our tribe and tempering our expression of how seriously we hold these views, is benefitted by a smidgeon of humility and humor.
